FOOTBALL: South vs. East Columbus tonight

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The South Columbus High School varsity football team will travel to East Columbus tonight for the first regular season game of the season.

The Gators of East Columbus finished last year with a 5-8 record, while the South Columbus Stallions finished on top of the 3-A/2-A Waccamaw standings with a 10-1 overall record.

Two reported shot at a hospital in Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Officers in Columbus County are investigating a double shooting that happened at the hospital Friday morning around 7:00.

Police in Whiteville say a man walked into the parking lot of Columbus Regional Healthcare System, shot a woman and another man. The shooting took place on the visitor's side of the hospital.

According to police, Elijah Jones shot his estranged wife, Joan Everette, and her new boyfriend Bobby Ray Shipman. Everette was killed at the scene, and Shipman was taken to the hospital for treatment. There is no word on his condition at this time.

Authorities say Jones turned himself into the courthouse shortly after the incident.

Police say the estranged couple recently started having domestic issues. Up until last Friday, police provided security at Everette's job after she received threats from Jones.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Whiteville City Schools announced on its Twitter account that Pam Sutton was named the District Teacher of the Year.

Sutton teaches at Whiteville Primary School.

New teachers prep for beginning of school year

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — New teachers with the Columbus County School system participated in a week-long training orientation recently.

According to Columbus County Schools, the event helped prepare the new teachers for the beginning of the school year and was led by Beginning Teacher Support Program Director Tammy Dorman.

Chadbourn officials crack down on abandoned buildings

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - If you've driven down Brown Street in Chadbourn lately, you've probably noticed some abandoned buildings that have been in the town for years have now been torn down.

Since an ice storm caved the room of an abandoned building last year, town officials have put more focus on getting rid of unsafe and empty buildings, according to Chadbourn Town Manager Stevie Cox.

Some property owners at the intersection of Railroad and Brown have volunteered to condemn their buildings.

There will be a hearing August 24 where code enforcement officers will go through a list of abandoned buildings. The owners of the property will have to have them condemned or the town will.

License plate agency closing in Whiteville

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - The license plate agency in Whiteville will be closing at the end of the day on September 9th.

The agency has been operating on a month-to-month basis since the contractor there chose not to reapply for a contract.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is reviewing applicants to operate a new agency in the Columbus County area. The DMV should name a new contractor and location soon, according to a news release.
