Spivey heading to N. Myrtle Beach

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The winding road of coaching is taking T.J. Spivey to North Myrtle Beach high school where he'll be a defensive coordinator.

Spivey recently resigned as head coach at West Columbus before ever coaching a game with the Vikings.  It would have been Spivey's first ever head coaching position.

Spivey was an assistant at West Brunswick before joining the staff at West Columbus in the spring when he led the Viking junior varsity baseball program.

West Columbus brought back former head coach Wayne Williamson to lead the Vikings in the upcoming season.

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - A 9-year-old boy battling his third bout of leukemia received some promising news.

Colby Byrd was most recently diagnosed back in March. In May, hundreds of people attended a bone marrow drive at Colby's school, Old Dock Elementary in Whiteville.  Then in June, Colby's family received the news that a donor match had been found.

Wednesday, Colby's mother said they received the preliminary results from a bone marrow biopsy and there were no cancer cells. The donor's cells appear to be growing in Colby's body.
