N.C. Historian of the Year to speak in Whiteville

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Michael C. Hardy, North Carolina's Historian of the Year, will reportedly be the featured speaker at Camp 794's July meeting on Sunday, July 10.

Hardy's topics have included soldier life, biographies and battle analysis. His books have also reportedly won awards. Both the "Battle of Hanover Court House: Turning Point of the Peninsula Campaign" and "A Short History of Old Watauga County" won the Willie Parker Peace History Book Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians.

Memorial Ride for the Fallen Heroes will kick off in Columbus Co.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Memorial Ride for the Fallen Heroes will begin in the Whiteville Walmart parking lot on Saturday, July 9 at 11 a.m.

Registration for the motorcycle ride will be from 10 to 11 a.m. and will cost $20 per person or $25 with a passenger.

After departing from Walmart, the motorcade is expected to travel south on U.S. 701 to S.C. Hwy. 9 for a stop at HB Spokes. The riders will get back on the road and head north on U.S. 18 to Beach House Harley Davidson. They’ll take the Hwy. 421 MLK Bypass in Wilmington to Kerr Avenue and to the National Guard Armory at around 2 p.m.

Freedman pleads guilty to discharging hog waste into Waccamaw River tributary

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — After a week of trial that began on June 28, Freedman Farms, Inc. and its president, William B. Freedman, pleaded guilty to a felony violation of the Clean Water Act, for discharging hog waste into Browder’s Branch, a tributary to the Waccamaw River.

According to a news release from the Department of Justice, Freedman Farms had approximately 4,800 hogs and their waste was supposed to be directed to two lagoons for treatment and disposal. In December of 2007, hog waste was reportedly discharged directly into Browder’s Branch.

Freedman pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor violation of the Clean Water Act, a federal law that makes it illegal to knowingly or negligently discharge a pollutant into a water of the United States, for his role in the incident.

According to the plea agreement for Freedman Farms filed Wednesday, the government and the corporate defendant have jointly asked the court to sentence Freedman Farms to pay $1.5 million, serve a term of five years’ probation, and publish a public apology. Under the plea agreement for William Freedman, the defendant reportedly faces up to one year in prison.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Take the Lake 2011 is a free event designed for people to push their own personal endurance challenges.

Competitors can choose between the following events:

  • Saturday, Sept. 3 at 8 a.m., 15-mile walk beginning at Lake Waccamaw State Park visitor’s center
  • Sunday, Sept. 4 at 8 a.m., 14-mile paddle beginning on the public beach next to Dale’s Seafood
  • Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m., 15-mile bike and hike beginning at Dale’s Seafood
  • Monday, Sept. 5 at 8 a.m., 4-mile swim beginning at either Dale’s Seafood or the dam, depending on the winds

These are not races and are not fundraisers. According to the event’s website, the events were created by “people who love beautiful Lake Waccamaw.”

There is also a TTL X-treme! event on Aug. 27 that costs $55 if you register before Aug. 10 and $68 if you wait until after that date. The TTL-Xtreme! includes 48 miles in a single day. Here are the requirements to finish:

  • 15-mile bike and hike (12-mile bike and 3-mile hike)
  • 4-mile swim
  • 14-mile paddle
  • 15-mile walk/run

Donors will be accepted from 2:30 until 7 p.m. at the church, located at 257 Church St. in Cerro Gordo.

Columbus County rescue squad may get extension for certification

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — A rescue squad in Columbus County may get an extension of time for its members to obtain EMT Intermediate certification.

According to the News Reporter, a July 1 deadline was put in place for all squads to be certified. Cerro Gordo Fire and Rescue reportedly did not meet the deadline and commissioners may grant an extension.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Everlene Davis officially filed for at the Columbus County Board of Elections to run for Town Commissioner in Brunswick on Wednesday.

Davis is the first person to file for the position, which opened up on July 1.
