Columbus Charter School teacher of the year announced

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Carla Fisher was recently elected at the 2011-12 Teacher of the Year at the Columbus Charter School in Whiteville, according to the News Reporter.

“I was extremely surprised at first, then honored to be selected by my colleagues,” Fisher told the News Reporter. “I felt surprised, especially because I feel that my career has only just begun. There are so many wonderful and accomplished teachers at my school. I feel very fortunate to have had this honor bestowed upon me.”

Columbus Co. celebrates Fourth of July

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Columbus County post office windows be closed until Tuesday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day, according to the Whiteville News Reporter.

County library branches will reportedly reopen Tuesday at 9 a.m. All banks and federal, state, county and municipal offices will also be closed on Monday.

SCC to offer two continuing-education classes

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Southeastern Community College will reportedly offer two upcoming continuing-education classes to help job seekers gain new skills.

  • HVAC Heating and Air Conditioning class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 5- Aug. 11, from 6-10 p.m. in M-Building, room 131A. The class covers troubleshooting and servicing of air conditioning/heating systems. Students will perform in-shop, hands-on diagnosis, repair, and proper cleaning techniques of cooling/heating systems. Course topics include safety, tools, electrical components and controls. Upon completion, students may work toward industry-recognized certifications.
  • The Masonry Projects class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 5-Aug. 11, from 6-9 p.m. in M-Building, room 104. This course will cover basic knowledge, training, and practical hands-on experience that will introduce students to the masonry/bricklaying trade. Students will learn to create a project using block, brick, or concrete.

There is a $120 tuition fee and a $1.25 insurance fee for each class.

Arson suspected in fire at hunters camp in Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Authorities in Columbus County say arson is the cause of a fire that burned fifty acres Thursday afternoon near Tabor City.

The fire was spotted by a logger in the area.  It started at an old building hunters use as a camp on a tree farm on Highway 410 around 3pm Thursday.  It spread to the woods.

Authorities say it's good they got it stopped quickly, because there are 10,000 acres of forest in that area.

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) — Whiteville City Schools held its annual Custodial Appreciation and Recognition breakfast on June 21.

Assistant Superintendent Anthony Martin presented the following awards:

  • Helping Hands Award and Custodial Team of the Year, Edgewood Elementary School (Homer Kirk, Larry Green, Andre Smith, and Tony McDougal)
  • Most Improved Custodial Team of the Year, Whiteville High School (Tony Ward, Francisco Castrejon, Gary Jones, Willie Marley)
  • Cleanest School and Most Efficient Custodial Team of the Year, Whiteville Primary School (Daniel Keel, Kenneth Gore, Travis Gurgainus, and Richard Smith)
  • Custodian of the Year, Tony McDougal (Edgewood Elementary School)

Columbus County Farmer's Market plans Boston Butt Sale for Saturday

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Columbus County Community Farmer’s Market will hold another Boston Butt Sale on Saturday, July 2 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Advance tickets are required and cost $25 each.
