Will you take the lake?

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Take the Lake 2011 is a free event designed for people to push their own personal endurance challenges.

Competitors can choose between the following events:

  • Saturday, Sept. 3 at 8 a.m., 15-mile walk beginning at Lake Waccamaw State Park visitor’s center
  • Sunday, Sept. 4 at 8 a.m., 14-mile paddle beginning on the public beach next to Dale’s Seafood
  • Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m., 15-mile bike and hike beginning at Dale’s Seafood
  • Monday, Sept. 5 at 8 a.m., 4-mile swim beginning at either Dale’s Seafood or the dam, depending on the winds

These are not races and are not fundraisers. According to the event’s website, the events were created by “people who love beautiful Lake Waccamaw.”

There is also a TTL X-treme! event on Aug. 27 that costs $55 if you register before Aug. 10 and $68 if you wait until after that date. The TTL-Xtreme! includes 48 miles in a single day. Here are the requirements to finish:

  • 15-mile bike and hike (12-mile bike and 3-mile hike)
  • 4-mile swim
  • 14-mile paddle
  • 15-mile walk/run

Cerro Gordo Baptist plans blood drive

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Cerro Gordo Baptist Church will host a community blood drive on Thursday, July 7.

Donors will be accepted from 2:30 until 7 p.m. at the church, located at 257 Church St. in Cerro Gordo.

Columbus County rescue squad may get extension for certification

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — A rescue squad in Columbus County may get an extension of time for its members to obtain EMT Intermediate certification.

According to the News Reporter, a July 1 deadline was put in place for all squads to be certified. Cerro Gordo Fire and Rescue reportedly did not meet the deadline and commissioners may grant an extension.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Everlene Davis officially filed for at the Columbus County Board of Elections to run for Town Commissioner in Brunswick on Wednesday.

Davis is the first person to file for the position, which opened up on July 1.

Business in Washington, DC causes Senator Hagan to cancel trip to Whiteville

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — U.S. Senator Kay Hagan has cancelled a planned trip to Whiteville.

Hagan was scheduled to host a "Conversations with Kay" event at Southeastern Community College on Thursday, July 7. According to a news release from her office, Senate business with keep her in Washington, DC.

She also cancelled events in Elizabethtown and Bolivia for the same day. All three events will reportedly be rescheduled for a later date.

Jenkins Bellamy signs up for re-election in Bolton

BOLTON, NC (WECT) - Geraldine Jenkins Bellamy signed up Tuesday to run for for re-election as a town alderman Tuesday.

Jenkins Bellamy was the lone candidate to sign up for a run for office in Columbus County Tuesday.  On the Bolton town website, Jenkins Bellamy is listed as Mayor Pro-Tem for the town.

It's only the second day to sign up to run for municipal office.

The filing period runs through July 15th.

Columbus Co. schools narrow search for superintendent

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Officials in Columbus County are still searching for a superintendent to oversee their school system.

According to the Whiteville News Reporter, the board of education interviewed five finalists for the job last week.

Interim superintendent Alan Faulk is vying for the position, in addition to another applicant from the county school system, one from Whiteville City Schools and two candidates from out of the county.
