Students survive Camp Disaster

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Rising ninth and tenth graders were introduced to allied-health careers during Camp Disaster, a four-day, hands-on camp held recently at Southeastern Community College.

According to a news release from SCC, the camp provided interactive lessons in medical laboratory technology, pharmacy, nursing, CPR and first-aid training. The campers reportedly toured the college’s health facilities, as well as Columbus Regional Healthcare System.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Authorities have arrested a man accused of slashing his grandmother's neck.

According to the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a home in the 5000 block of Sam Potts Highway in Hallsboro Friday after reports the residence's owner, 75-year-old Betty Smith Pace, had not been seen by family members since the previous Sunday.

When deputies investigated the home, they found Pace's body with indications of foul play.  Her car and cell phone were also missing from the home.

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - A native of Whiteville has been elected to to the North Carolina Bar Association's General Practice Hall of Fame.

Richard Lewis was born in Whiteville in 1935, where he completed high school.  He went on to graduate from Notre Dame, served in the US Navy and eventually graduated from the UNC School of Law.  Five people were inducted in total, bringing the total Hall of Fame membership to 130 attorneys.

Lewis has been practicing law in Fayetteville his whole career.  Along with his general practice related to real estate law, he has been

SCC nurses graduate, receive Florence Nightingale lamps

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Southeastern Community College Associate Degree Nursing Class of 2011 recently held its pinning ceremony at the Lawrence R. Bowers Cultural Arts Center on the campus of Whiteville High School.

According to a news release from the school, Peggy Blackmon, dean of Allied Health, Business and Technology, pinned the graduates and presented each with a Florence Nightingale lamp.

The ADN class officers were:

  • Deidre Ward, president
  • Tracie Reaves, secretary
  • Nancy Nobles, treasurer

Instructor Catherine Cook presented the Student Government Award to Baron Griffith, who earned the highest grade point average. Instructor Amy George awarded the Great 100 Scholarship to freshman Jacqueline Beck. Blackmon presented the Eleen Williams Nursing Scholarship to freshman Rebecca Ward.

Severe thunderstorm warning for Bladen, Columbus, Pender until 2:45

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for western Pender, southeastern Bladen and northeastern Columbus Counties until 2:45pm.

At 1:39pm, the National Weather Service radar indicated a thunderstorm capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60mph.  It was located near Kelly, or 21 miles southeast of Elizabethtown, and moving northeast at 10mph.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The annual Custodial Banquet was held recently for Columbus County Schools.

According to the schools’ website, the following awards were given out:

  • Top High School: West Columbus
  • Top Custodian: Grady Ward, Hallsboro
  • Most Improved Custodian: Wayne Edge

More strong storms developing this afternoon

 

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for eastern Robeson, western Bladen County and northwest Columbus County until 5:30pm.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected for much of southeastern North Carolina this afternoon, especially inland.

Severe thunderstorms can contain gusty winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rain.
