School officials make layoffs in Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – School officials in Columbus County have already begun laying off employees in anticipation of the general assembly expected to override Gov. Bev Perdue's budget veto Wednesday.

According to Interim Superintendent Alan Faulk, Columbus County schools will lose $1.9 million if the governor's veto is overturned.

Faulk said so far, one teacher and six teacher assistants have lost their jobs in Columbus County.

Whiteville City Council to discuss outdoor seating

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – City council members in Whiteville will discuss sidewalk seating during their meeting Tuesday night.

City officials say they've had several restaurant owners in the downtown area and central business district ask about placing tables and chairs on sidewalks near their facilities so customers could eat outside.

City staffers in Whiteville have looked at sidewalk seating ordinances in Carolina Beach and Wilmington and will present their recommendations to council members.

World Changers arrive in Columbus Co. to do home renovations

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — More than 140 teenagers from the World Changers organization are in Columbus County until Saturday.

The teenagers paid $250 each to leave the comfort of their own homes and do free repairs and labor on houses in Fair Bluff, Tabor City and Riegelwood. They're cleaning and renovating approximately 25 different buildings and homes, including a library and the Department of Aging, for the elderly and those with low incomes.

SCC offers seminars in late June

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Continuing Education Division at Southeastern Community College will offer seminars and classes in the coming weeks.

Here are the course descriptions:

  • Independent Auto Dealers Initial Course: The course will be offered on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 28 and 29 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in T-Building, room 122. The registration fee is $65, plus $5 for class materials. This 12-hour course is for individuals trying to obtain their license to become independent auto dealers.
  • Be Free from Debt’s Hold: The free seminar will be offered Tuesday, June 28, from 6-9 p.m. in T- Building, room 120. The seminar will cover a simple but effective method to becoming debt free.  Participants will learn to recognize shams and “quick fixes” and how to properly and legally deal with creditors. Attendees should bring a calculator and a list of their debts with balances and monthly payments to learn how to develop a debt-elimination plan that can be implemented immediately.

Sheriff requests 12 new patrol cars, only granted six

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — According to the Whiteville News Reporter, Sheriff Chris Batten requested 12 new patrol cars, but only six new cars are included in the county’s budget for the sheriff’s department.

County Manager Bill Clark reportedly asked for “six Dodge Chargers at $20,756 and equipment totaling $30,000 to up-fit the cars, plus in car videos totaling $48,000.”

Batten told the News Reporter, “I am very frustrated that the commissioners do not feel the need to fund vehicles in the place of old high mileage cars versus us having to deal with continuous high cost maintenance charges.”

Whiteville High seniors will graduate Tuesday

Whiteville High seniors will graduate Tuesday

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) — Whiteville High School seniors will walk across the stage to graduate on Tuesday, June 14 at 9 a.m. at Legion Stadium. Seniors must arrive by 8 a.m.

In the event of inclement weather, commencement will be held on the same day but at 6:30 p.m. in the Whiteville High School gymnasium. Students will receive five tickets for admission into the gym. Overflow seating, with a live video feed, will be available in the auditorium.

Celebrate the great outdoors tonight

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) – Celebrate the great outdoors Saturday at Lake Waccamaw State Park with a special event.

Enjoy being outside by sitting around a campfire and roasting marshmallows.

The event will take place Saturday, June 11 in the picnic area of the park.
