WEATHER: A foggy start to your Tuesday morning

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Allow some extra time this morning as some areas are still dealing with patchy fog. Most of the area, however, is clear.

The same cold front that brought us showers and storms Monday will sweep through the area this morning ushering in slightly drier air as winds shift out of the northwest. The lingering boundary will trigger a slight chance (20%) of showers and possibly a thunderstorm this afternoon.

Temperatures will climb into the mid 80s with partly cloudy skies. Expect mostly cloudy skies tonight with temperatures in the upper 60s.

Southeastern Community College could help replace stolen Venus Flytraps

The science department at Southeastern Community College clones Venus Flytraps and sells them to places like The North Carolina Zoo.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Local college students could help boost the number of Venus Flytraps.

The science department at Southeastern Community College clones Venus Flytraps and sells them to places like The North Carolina Zoo.

Instructors at Southeastern say they've contacted officials with Alderman Park who are interested in buying Venus Fly Traps after thieves took more than 1,000 out of the ground last week.

"When I first got the message last Thursday that this had happened, it's just like your heart stops. Because the habitat is just so small for this plant. It's in many counties, but still coastal counties. There are many agencies trying to protect the plant," said Becky Westbrooks, a Biology and Environment Science instructor at Southeastern Community College.

Officials investigate whether prostitution was part of robbery

A group of construction workers from Florida were robbed by two men Sunday at the Holiday Motel off Highway 701 Business outside of Whiteville, according to deputies.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A group of construction workers from Florida were robbed by two men Sunday at the Holiday Motel off Highway 701 Business outside of Whiteville, according to deputies.

Investigators with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office say the construction workers reported being approached by a prostitute at a gas station earlier in the day. They said the prostitute ended up with them at the hotel.

Deputies are investigating to see if the men who robbed the construction workers were part of a set up by the prostitute, or if it was a random robbery.

According to Mayor Lewis Hatcher, there is not a large prostitution problem in Columbus County, but there are some out there.

Hatcher said it's easy to keep an eye on the motels because there are only a few in the county, and it's easier for people to get away with prostitution in rural areas.

WEATHER: Showers and T-storms

Showers and thunderstorms ahead of a slow moving cold front will bring us some much needed rain across eastern North Carolina today.

Granted it won't be an all day rain storm in fact its mainly a series of upper level impulses ahead of the cold front will bring several rounds of those moderate to heavy soaker thunderstorms as we move throughout the first half of the day.

By late this afternoon or early evening, conditions will be improving some - as the cold front moves off shore.  Some isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected with the fronts passing.
