Men accused of stealing almost 3,000 pieces of jewelry

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - Investigators say they have made two arrests in connection to a burglary at a pawn store.

Friday, South Carolina authorities transported Victor Davalos and Josniel Mena to the Whiteville Police Department.

According to police, the men stole nearly 3,000 pieces of jewelry from Pawn USA off Madison Street in Whiteville. The men allegedly broke into Pawn USA by cutting a hole in the roof.

Authorities say that after breaking into the business, Mena and Davalos were pulled over by deputies in South Carolina, when it was discovered that they had about $500,000 worth of jewelry in a pillowcase that had Pawn USA tags.

Investigators describe the men as professional criminals. They say that when the pair broke into the pawn shop, they disabled the alarm system and camera system.

The suspects weren’t apprehended until Friday because investigators had to first determine if all of the stolen jewelry came from the same place.
