COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Carnival of the Animals, an art exhibit featuring a collection of recent linoleum and wood block prints by artist Michael Van Hout, opens Aug. 27 at Southeastern Community College. The exhibit will also include selected works by Van Hout’s students from DREAMS of Wilmington, a nonprofit that provides youth in need with high-quality, free-of-charge programming in the literary, visual, multimedia and performing arts.
Van Hout frequently works in sculptural forms using wire, his favored material for 30 years. He studied sculpture at UNC Greensboro, and has worked out of ACME studios in downtown Wilmington. Van Hout’s installations can be seen at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher, UNC Wilmington, and Greenfield Lake Park. His classes at DREAMS of Wilmington incorporate recycled art as well as sculpture and printmaking.
“Michael applies many of the same principles in his sculptures to the printmaking process, namely simple lines that capture the essence of the subject and a limited palette within bold, clean shapes. He is teaching these tools to his DREAMS students, ages 8-13. The show is filled with their whimsical interpretations of all kinds of creatures,” said SCC Art Instructor September Krueger.
A closing reception for the exhibit will be held Sept. 18, 5-7 p.m., in the Upstairs Gallery, located on the second floor of A-Building on the SCC campus.
The exhibit can be viewed Aug. 27-Sept. 28, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Upstairs Gallery is funded by the SCC Foundation.
