COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Following a meeting where dozens of people met in Columbus County to talk about bringing train service between the county and several South Carolina counties to the area, officials are discussing options.
A train has not traveled through Columbus County and two counties in South Carolina in a year, due to parts of the rail system not meeting regulations.
However, many officials in Columbus County who attended the meeting feel confident they'll be able to find a solution.
“One was a public private partnership between North Carolina and South Carolina and private industry,” said Chadbourn Mayor, Kenneth Waddell. “And also, a joint partnership with North Carolina and South Carolina as an economic development vehicle for the counties.”
Waddell added that it could be a year before they get trains traveling through Columbus County again.
A newly-formed committee will meet in two weeks to talk about a solution.
