COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College’s Workforce and Community Development Division will offer a Direct Care Worker Training course from Oct. 22 through Nov. 29. The class will meet Monday through Thursday, 8:30-11:30 a.m. in mobile unit 9-1 on the SCC campus.

Direct care worker is one of the fastest growing occupations in the region. Students in the class will learn to work in various settings to provide care for individuals of all ages who have physical, mental, or developmental disabilities or a chronic illness.

They will learn how to provide direct care in a home setting and earn certificates as they train. Participants will also learn how to search for a job and workplace skills.

The direct care worker course was initiated through a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. The curriculum was developed through the cooperation of the N.C. Department of Community Colleges, the UNC Chapel Hill Institute on Aging, and a private consulting firm.  

Class fees may be waived for qualifying students by contacting the Columbus County JobLink Career Center at (910) 642-7141, ext. 261, or by visiting the Center in A-Building on the SCC campus.
