Treatment for Hyrdilla set for end of May

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) - Earlier this week Lake Waccamaw Town Council approved a contract to move forward with plans to treat Hydrilla. The weed is growing in the lake and rangers at Lake Waccamaw State park say, it's important to kill it before it damages the ecosystem.

According to town manager Darren Currie, at the end of this month workers with the company Sepro will start the treatment.

Currie says, with the weather warming up Hyrdrilla can quickly start to grow.

It will cost thousands of dollars to treat the weed.

Department of aging trying to prevent future audits

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Monday night, workers at Columbus County's Department of Aging are planning to tell county officials how they will prevent future audits from the state.

The move comes after a self-audit revealed the county owes the state $68,000.

County manager Bill Clark says, the department was getting paid for services it wasn't providing. Now steps are being taken to make sure it doesn't happen again.

"The supervisor of that department which is the home care department is now reviewing all the documentation that matches up with the billing. Before we actually send in the billing," said Clark. He also says, case managers will have their work randomly reviewed.  Copyright 2013 WECT. All rights reserved.
