SCC offers medical terminology, health care billing courses

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Southeastern Community College’s Workforce and Community Development Division will offer several healthcare classes in the coming weeks. To pre-register or for more information, call (910) 642-7141, ext. 296, 397 or 425.

Financial assistance with registration fees and books to gain new employment-related skills may be available through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and other funding sources. To see if they qualify, students should contact the Columbus County Joblink Career Center immediately at (910)642-7141, ext. 261 or by visiting the Center in A-Building on the SCC campus.

Medical Terminology

Medical Terminology will be offered in the classroom and online. The classroom course is scheduled for Tuesdays, May 15-July 31, 5:30-9:30 p.m., in R-Building, room 101. The online course will be offered May 14-Aug. 3. The registration fee is $120, and the required textbook, “Medical Terminology for Health Professions,” can be purchased at SCC Bookstore for $108.70 plus tax or from an online vendor. An understanding of hundreds of complex medical terms is essential for anyone working in any capacity in a medical office. Students will learn the spelling, pronunciation and meaning of a wide range of medical terms. This course is a prerequisite for Healthcare Billing and Coding Specialist courses.

Health Care Billing & Coding Specialist Part II – CPT

Health Care Billing & Coding Specialist Part II – CPT will be offered online May 14-Aug. 3. The registration fee is $175. The class requires two textbooks: “Step-by-Step Medical Coding 2012,” $79.95 plus tax; and “CPT 2011 Professional Edition,” $107.95 plus tax. Both books can be purchased at SCC Bookstore or from an online vendor. Registration for online courses must be completed by May 10 at noon. This is part two of the Healthcare Billing and Coding Specialist Program, which provides advanced terminology, coding with the CPT codes and coding review for the Certified Professional Coders (CPC) national exam. Students will be prepared to sit for the CPC exam upon completion of Parts I and II.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A water main break caused two local schools to release students early on Friday.

Chadbourn Middle and Chadbourn Elementary schools were released at 1 p.m., according to school officials.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Southeastern Community College will hold its 48th commencement ceremony on Friday, May 4.

Approximately 200 students will receive degrees, diplomas or certificates, and 90 students will receive the General Education Development (GED) certificate.

The ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. at SCC, located at 4564 Chadbourn Highway in Whiteville.

Columbus Co. holds annual picnic for senior citizens

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Entertainment, medical advice, and safety tips -- those are some of the advantages the hundreds of senior citizens in Columbus county say they receive every year at the county's senior citizen’s picnic.

Tuesday was the 29th annual picnic, which is held at the Columbus County fairgrounds.

The event is put on by the county's department of aging, and more than 400 attended the day’s festivities.

There were more than 20 informational booths there where doctors, nurses, and law enforcement officers gave out free information.

Columbus County has the largest department of aging in the state, and senior citizens make up a third of the county's population.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Thursday night, officials with the Columbus County School System held their annual award banquet.

According to Superintendent Alan Faulk, Tara Pate of Hallsboro Artesia Elementary is this year's teacher of the year.

Janet Hedrick of Acme-Delco Elementary School is this year's principal of the year.

Celebrate local art during the Lunch on the Lawn

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) – Some of the best art pieces in Columbus County will be up for sale this weekend during the 12th annual Lunch on the Lawn in Lake Waccamaw.

The event is one of the Depot Museum’s largest fundraisers.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Local artists and high school students will be selling their work.

Tickets for the luncheon are $20 and can be purchased at the Depot Museum.
