Plan to bring new charter school to Lake Waccamaw advances

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) - A proposal to bring a new charter school to the Lake Waccamaw area of Columbus County is moving forward.

The proposal comes from the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, Inc., which is a non-profit group that offers in-home and out-of-home placement for children. The group wants to open Flemington Academy to offer 220 days of instruction, instead of the typical 180-day school calendar.

The North Carolina Public Charter School Advisory Council voted 14 to 1 this month to recommend Flemington Academy to the State Board of Education for consideration as a charter school. The Board of Education will make its final decision in September.

The school could open its doors as early as September 2013.
