SCC nursing students to hold substance abuse awareness event

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Nursing students at Southeastern Community College are organizing a special event on Saturday, April 27, to raise awareness about substance abuse. Operation ASAP will be held on the SCC campus in front of A-Building from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The event will include educational booths as well as activities for children. Hotdogs, drinks and baked treats will be served free of charge.

Members of the SCC evening and weekend nursing program are partnering with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and other local agencies to sponsor the event.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Flemington Academy will host an informational session next week at Riegelwood Baptist Church.

Flemington Academy is a charter school located in Lake Waccamaw. The academy received final approval in March and is now taking applications to be entered into its student lottery system.

The lottery drawing will be held in May on the school’s campus.

According to a press release from the school, the academy’s approach to education will provide an alternative for students that are not seeing success as a result of their efforts in the traditional setting. An integrated curriculum, paired with personalized teaching methods will give students the chance to receive a more tailored academic experience.

The school will operate on a year-round schedule with 220 days of instruction each academic year.

DELCO, NC (WECT) - The newest public charter school for Columbus County is now starting to take applications for the 2013-14 school year.

The STEM Education for a Global Society academy board is taking applications for the school set to open in Delco starting in August.

Columbus Co. students participate in Battle of the Books

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Several Columbus County Schools students participated in the March 5 Battle of the Books Competition, with Nakina Middle School coming in first place, according to the school system’s website.

Hallsboro Middle School came in second place, while Chadbourn Middle School came in third place.

The competition encourages middle school students to read and improve their reading skills.

The competition took place at East Columbus High School.
