Get ready for the free Plant Swap & Sale

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Columbus County Farmers Market and the Columbus County Extension Master Gardeners will celebrate the arrival of spring with a free Plant Swap & Sale later this week.

This event will be held Saturday, April 27, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring plants, seeds, bulbs, cuttings, plant books, and gardening tools to swap or sell to other plant enthusiasts. Booth space and admission is free.

Lunch will be for sale for $5 a plate or $6 with a drink. Proceeds will benefit the Columbus County Farmers Market operating fund.

SCC offering MTA exams during special event

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College is partnering with Microsoft to provide a special opportunity May 1-2 for jobseekers, as well as people who are currently employed, to earn a certification to prove their technology skills.

The College is offering the Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification exams for only a $5 sitting fee during the two-day event. MTA is an industry-recognized credential for those pursuing a career path in IT infrastructure, database design, or software development using Microsoft technologies.

SCC choir to present spring concert

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The SCC Choir under the direction of Xavier Carteret will present a spring concert on Tuesday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the College auditorium. 

Among the choral selections to be performed are "You Are the New Day" by John David, "For Good" from Wicked, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, "Sicut Locutus Est" from the Magnificat by Johann Sebastian Bach, and "The Prayer," music and lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager and David Foster.  

Vocal soloists will include Roman Grainger, Jesse McBride, and Leigh Ann Shooter. The choir accompanist is Dr. Sharyn Edwards, and the voice student accompanist is Jeannie Ulrich. The concert is free and open to the public.

The event will take place Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m. at Southeastern Community College, according to the event’s website.

SCC to celebrate student art and writing April 15

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College will hold a public reception on Monday, April 15, to mark the opening of a student art exhibit and the release of the latest issue of “Aires,” the College’s journal of art and literature. The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. in the A-Building Upstairs Gallery.

The exhibit features work by SCC students in studio courses, including drawing, printmaking, sculpture, design and ceramics. 

“Studio courses at SCC are available to all students who wish to experience artistic media hands-on,” said SCC Art Instructor September Krueger. “We hope to engage in some collaborative entries in Aries for the future where there is student artwork that accompanies the written submissions.”

SCC hosts annual High School Jazz Festival

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Richard F. Burkhardt Fine and Performing Arts Series will present the 8th Annual High School Jazz Band Festival and Competition April 18-20 at Southeastern Community College. High school jazz bands will compete Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium.

Each band will receive a grade and comments from the judges. In addition, outstanding students will be selected to perform in the honors jazz band performance on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., also in the SCC Auditorium.

The honors jazz band will be led by guest clinician John Brown, associate professor and director of the Duke Jazz Program. Brown, a bassist, composer, educator and actor, is a native of Fayetteville and currently resides in Durham.

SCC nursing students to hold substance abuse awareness event

SCC nursing students to hold substance abuse awareness event

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Nursing students at Southeastern Community College are organizing a special event on Saturday, April 27, to raise awareness about substance abuse. Operation ASAP will be held on the SCC campus in front of A-Building from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The event will include educational booths as well as activities for children. Hotdogs, drinks and baked treats will be served free of charge.

Members of the SCC evening and weekend nursing program are partnering with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and other local agencies to sponsor the event.
