COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The North Carolina Cardboard Boat Championships will be held this weekend at the Waccamaw Sailing Club in Lake Waccamaw.
The Rotary Club of Whiteville held the inaugural event this weekend last year in front of a crowd of more than 300.
“Last year we had teams enter from as far away as Winston-Salem”, said Coburn Powell, Whiteville Rotary Club President. “By positioning this as a state-wide event, we are hoping to start a North Carolina Father’s Day weekend tradition.”
According to a news release, the race challenge is to design and build a human-powered, cardboard boat that’s capable of finishing around a 200-yard course.
The schedule of events begins with last minute boat building at 9:00 Saturday morning, team registration and check-in at 11:00 a.m., boat judging at noon, races at 1:00 p.m., followed by the post-race awards ceremony.
