SCC to host Eco-Run on April 13

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College will host an Eco-5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m. on the College’s campus. Both events are free and open to the public.

The Kids Fun Run, for children 12 years old and younger, will take place in the circle drive in front of A-Building. The 5K will take place in the loop drive around campus, with the start/finish line in front of A-Building.

The overall male and female winner will receive a medal. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will receive a certificate.

Flip the switch in observance of Earth Hour this weekend

(WECT) - Don't forget to flip the switch in support of Earth Hour, which begins this weekend.

Earth Hour will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.  People and businesses worldwide will turn off their lights in order to conserve energy.

According to earthhour.org, Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

Space still available to canoe at Lake Waccamaw State Park this weekend

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) – The Cape Fear Sierra Club is inviting you to explore Lake Waccamaw State Park on Sunday, March 24.

Park rangers will lead a two-hour paddle beginning at 10 a.m. All equipment is provided, but you are welcome to bring your own boat. 

Participants must be able to swim.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – There’s still time to sign up for Relay For Life of Columbus County – in fact, only two more teams are needed to reach the group’s 50 team goal.

According to Relay For Life’s Facebook page, this year’s event will take place April 19 at Southeastern Community College.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Southeastern Community College Foundation is excited to announce that Dewey L. Hill has been selected as the 35th honoree of the Annual Foundation Dinner Theatre. The event, slated for Saturday, April 13, has a longstanding tradition of honoring individuals who have been loyal supporters of the Foundation and who have been instrumental in ensuring the success of Columbus County.

“What an honor to be selected for this recognition,” stated Hill. “For almost 50 years, this institution has offered our citizens the opportunity to pursue their educational goals and has provided leadership in the area of economic development. A majority of my workforce has been trained at SCC. Where would our many Columbus County businesses be without this resource?”

‘Boomer Games’ sporting event for seniors scheduled for April

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) –Senior citizens in Columbus County will soon be participating in the 2013 Columbus Boomer Games, according to the Tabor City Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page.

The event, which is scheduled for April, includes a 5K, bowling, golf, cycling and more. An awards celebration will take place May 3.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College’s Workforce and Community Development Division will offer several seminars in the coming weeks. To pre-register or for more information, call (910) 642-7141, ext. 296, 397 or 425.

Financial assistance with registration fees and books to gain new employment-related skills may be available through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and other funding sources. To see if they qualify, students should contact the Columbus County JobLink Career Center immediately at (910)642-7141, ext. 261 or by visiting the Center in A-Building on the SCC campus.
