‘Boomer Games’ sporting event for seniors scheduled for April

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) –Senior citizens in Columbus County will soon be participating in the 2013 Columbus Boomer Games, according to the Tabor City Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page.

The event, which is scheduled for April, includes a 5K, bowling, golf, cycling and more. An awards celebration will take place May 3.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College’s Workforce and Community Development Division will offer several seminars in the coming weeks. To pre-register or for more information, call (910) 642-7141, ext. 296, 397 or 425.

Financial assistance with registration fees and books to gain new employment-related skills may be available through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and other funding sources. To see if they qualify, students should contact the Columbus County JobLink Career Center immediately at (910)642-7141, ext. 261 or by visiting the Center in A-Building on the SCC campus.

Volunteer fire department holds rodeo

Volunteer fire department holds rodeo

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) - The Kelly Volunteer Fire Department is holding a rodeo next month.

The gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. The action starts at 7:00 p.m.

The rodeo will be held at the Lake Waccamaw Boys and Girls Home Arena.

Tickets are $10. Admission for children ages 4 to 11 is $5 and children 3 and under are free.

Angels on Wheels to host Columbus Co. Relay for Life Golf Tournament

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Angels on Wheels will host its 1st annual Columbus County Relay for Life Golf Tournament next week, according to organizers.

The event will take place on Friday, March 22 at the Land-O-Lakes Golf Course located at 2950 Bill Hooks Rd. in Whiteville.

The tournament will feature a four player team, which at $240 per team includes a bagged lunch, goodie bag for each golfer and a sit down dinner during the hole sponsor.

All proceeds will benefit The American Cancer Society.

Large crowd expected for Southern Farm Days

Large crowd expected for Southern Farm Days

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 5th Annual Southern Farm Days will kick off this weekend in Lake Waccamaw. Farmers from across the state will show off their best and oldest tractors.

The event, sponsored by the Cape Fear Heritage Association, will take place Saturday and Sunday.

There will be food available, a tractor pull contest, a live farm animal exhibit and an antique car show.

Gates open both days at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

Money raised will go towards the Boys and Girls Home.

Sheriff's office presenting program aimed to deter reckless driving

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Columbus County Sheriff's Office will be teaming up with local schools and agencies soon to present a program aimed to warn students and parents of reckless driving.

According to a news release from the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, the program will be presented during the week of March 25, at both West Columbus High School and South Columbus High School.

Authorities say teen drivers are being injured at an alarming rate, and something needs to be done.

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) – The water canoe program at Lake Waccamaw is hosting a canoe trip soon, according to an event organizer.

Participants will begin paddling through Big Creek, then into Lake Waccamaw. Beginner and experienced paddlers are welcome, but participants must be able to swim.
