SCC to dedicate Nesmith Student Center on March 27

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College invites the public to celebrate the eagerly anticipated grand opening of the Nesmith Student Center on Wednesday, March 27, at 11 a.m.

The completely renovated facility, formerly known as G-Building, serves as the hub for student life. The building, located in the center of campus, houses a fitness center, bookstore, Academic Skills Lab, Rams Cafe, and classrooms, as well as offices for Columbus Career and College Academy.

SCC to honor the 'godfather of community colleges'

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Schools across North Carolina, including Southeastern Community College, will honor Dr. W. Dallas Herring Wednesday.

Herring, originally from Duplin County, served as the chair of the State Board of Education. He was instrumental in the creation of the community college system.

To commemorate his legacy, SCC will hold a celebration at 11:00 a.m. in the A-Building Lobby.

Herring is widely regarded as the philosophical godfather of community colleges in North Carolina. He may be best known for his belief that education should be available to all.

Acme-Delco Middle holds career day

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Acme-Delco Middle School held a career day on Friday. 

The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classes had a chance to visit many different booths set up by different professionals representing a wide range of career options. 

First Alert Meteorologist Eric Davis represented WECT at its booth.

Colleen Ringrose art exhibit at SCC explores watermarks

Southeastern Community College will hold a public reception on Feb. 25 from 5-7 p.m. to mark the opening of an art exhibit featuring work inspired by watermarks and wall papers from the 1930s.

Artist Colleen Ringrose created the collection of encaustic paintings by combining the ancient art of wax painting with the computer technology of digital copy transfers. Her work focuses on the intersection of pictures of people and text.

These specific works were inspired by a book for stamp collectors from 1936.

SCC to Host Reading by Poet Adrian Matejka on Feb. 26

Southeastern Community College will host award-winning poet Adrian Matejka on Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. in celebration of National African-American History Month. The public is invited to attend the reading, book signing and reception, which will be held free of charge in the College’s auditorium.

Matejka was born in Nuremberg, Germany. He grew up in California and Indiana. He is a graduate of Indiana University and the MFA program at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The SCC Foundation is excited to announce that Dewey L. Hill will be the honorary chairman at the 35th Annual Foundation Dinner Theatre on Saturday, April 13. The former state representative, known for his prowess as a businessman and his advocacy for agriculture, always makes education and Southeastern Community College a priority.

“The Foundation board is very deliberate in its selection of an honoree for this prestigious event,” stated Executive Dean of Institutional Advancement Sue Hawks.

Community Leaders Institute to take place Fri, Sat

BOLTON, NC (WECT) – Several entities are joining efforts to host a Community Leaders Institute at Southeastern Community College later this week.

According to a press release, the institute will focus on:

  • Role of the federal , state and local governments
  • Youth issues and challenges
  • Economic development
  • Transportation
  • Housing and community development
  • Health issues

The Town of Bolton in conjunction with the Medical University of South Carolina, the Department of Energy, and the Town of Navassa are among the groups hosting the event.

The institute will be held Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23. Everyone is invited to attend. There is no cost and meals will be provided.
