Surprise proposal caught on cam

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – One lucky woman in Whiteville recently got the surprise of her life…and it was all caught on camera.

Kat Newton’s boyfriend, Kyle, orchestrated an elaborate surprise proposal at Collier’s Jewelers.

She hosts a show called Brunswick Biz for ATMC and thought an interview with a jeweler at the business was just part of the job. Instead, her fiancé showed up on one knee to surprise her.

STUDY: Columbus Co. unhealthiest in NC...again

Once again, Columbus County falls at the bottom of the list, weighing in as the least-healthy county in the state.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new study ranks Columbus County as the unhealthiest county in North Carolina...again.

The University of Wisconsin released the rankings, which shows 37 percent of children in the county are living in poverty, compared to 25 percent statewide.

The study says 28 percent of its residents are in poor or fair health.

According to the study, Bladen County didn't do much better, and was only ranked two place higher than Columbus at #98.

Most of the unhealthiest counties are in southeastern or northeastern North Carolina. The healthiest counties tend to be clustered around cities.

Wake County was ranked the healthiest county in the state, and New Hanover County was ranked 9th. Pender County came in at #20 on the list and Brunswick at #37.

Sign your kids up for tee-ball

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – If you’re planning on signing your kids up for a sports league this spring, Whiteville Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for tee-ball for kids ages 4 through 6.

According to the City of Whiteville’s Facebook page, registration is $15 for city residents and $25 for county residents.

Registration, which is open to both boys and girls, will end April 5.

Large crowd expected for Southern Farm Days

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 5th Annual Southern Farm Days will kick off this weekend in Lake Waccamaw. Farmers from across the state will show off their best and oldest tractors.

The event, sponsored by the Cape Fear Heritage Association, will take place Saturday and Sunday.

There will be food available, a tractor pull contest, a live farm animal exhibit and an antique car show.

Gates open both days at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

Money raised will go towards the Boys and Girls Home.

Sheriff's office presenting program aimed to deter reckless driving

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Columbus County Sheriff's Office will be teaming up with local schools and agencies soon to present a program aimed to warn students and parents of reckless driving.

According to a news release from the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, the program will be presented during the week of March 25, at both West Columbus High School and South Columbus High School.

Authorities say teen drivers are being injured at an alarming rate, and something needs to be done.

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – Old Dock Elementary School will host an open house Sunday, according to the Columbus County Schools website.

The event comes after the new addition to the main building for students in third through fifth grades.
