Getting fit through a program at church

RIEGELWOOD, NC (WECT) – Members of a church in Riegelwood are trying to help residents become healthier.

They county’s health department said they’ll soon start offering a program called Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less. The goal is to help people make better choices about eating and physical activity.

The program will start at Mount Pleasant AME Zion Church.

Commissioners talk about hospital's lease

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Columbus County Commissioners and administrators with Columbus Regional Healthcare System are having a workshop Monday night to talk about the hospital’s lease.

Officials with the hospital are leasing the building from the county and the lease is not up for nearly another five years, according to Commissioners. However, hospital administrators are considering millions of dollars worth of upgrades to the facility and would like to extend the lease.

The groups will also discuss the possibility of opening a Wellness Center for the county during the meeting.

Whiteville boil water advisory lifted

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Whiteville was under a boil water advisory from Friday afternoon until 10 a.m. Sunday, according to officials with Columbus County dispatch.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Water testing for contamination came back positive, so the advisory was in place as a precaution.

Residents were advised to boil all water before being used for consumption.

Health Dept. hours will stay the same for now

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It looks like the Columbus County health department hours are going to stay the same, for now.

Columbus County is the state's unhealthiest county. Kim Smith and her staff at the Health Department wanted to see if operating four days a week would make the county a little healthier.

Right now the Health Department is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Smith said they're proposing to change their hours to Monday – Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Smith said they want to have a four-day work week so they have more access to care for their patients.
