COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Last Thursday, Robert Worley, a farmer from Cerro Gordo, won the North Carolina farmer's market competition for the state's largest watermelon.

Worley's watermelon weighed in a 212 lbs. He and his son Adam won $1,000 for their prize-winning fruit.

He says he can use the title for bragging rights and as a marketing tool to draw more people to buy his melons. The average watermelon weighs approximately 50 lbs., but all Worley's tend to grow to be more than 150 lbs.

The farmer tells WECT that the key to his success is putting a lot of time in the crop and a few secrets, which he will not share.

The winning watermelon is on display for all to see at the N.C. Farmer's Market Restaurant in Raleigh.
