CHARLOTTE, NC (WECT) - The family of a Charlotte teen killed in Columbus County met earlier this week to announce a rally for justice.
The rally, for Jasmine Thar, is set for May 19, and will start at Ardrey Kelly High School in Charlotte and will travel to Chadbourn, where Thar was killed in December.
Civil rights activist John Barnett announced the plans for the protest.
"We aspire to have 100 cars, maybe, to travel to Chadbourn on May 19," he said.
Barnett said Friday he and Thar's family will be in Chadbourn Monday to pass out flyers and meet with local pastors to finalize the rally. They hope to have the bulk of the rally inside a church.
Thar and two others were hit by the same bullet, but even though the shooter, James Blackwell admits his gun accidentally fired when he was cleaning it, he has not been charged.
Thar's mother and friends have been in Chadbourn to meet with District Attorney Jon David.
According to Barnett, David says no charges are being filed since the gun is being tested to see whether it malfunctioned.
Barnett says he plans to apologize if, indeed, test results show the rifle misfired.
