COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Another company from China is showing interest in Columbus County.
A winery is in the process of opening up in the county, another company is interested in working with Whiteville's Tortimex plant, and now, a company wants to open up shop in the old landfill.
Gary Lanier, Columbus County's economic director, believes all of this potential positive news is showing people that county commissioners are open-minded when it comes to economic development.
According to Lanier, a representative for the company Standard Oil International contacted a county commissioner about doing business in the county.
Lanier says the company's headquarters is in China, but the representative does business in the southeastern part of the US.
He says officials with Standard Oil are interested in turning waste into diesel fuel.
Besides lowering the county's tipping fee, Lanier believes that could benefit the county, and says that the next step is to have someone from the company do a presentation at a future county commissioners meeting.
