Board of Education warned about prayer
News

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – A national organization has warned the Whiteville Board of Education to stop using sectarian prayer before meetings.

The American Humanist Association reports that a local citizen notified the group about it. The AHA is a non-profit that represents humanists, people who believe in living a moral life without the existence of a higher power.

The AHA requested a response from the board as to how and when it will stop praying before meetings. The group provided a week to respond before considering any legal action against the board.

The warning letter cites several legal precedents of separation of church and state.

This marks the second warning letter from the AHA's Appignani Legal Center to a governmental body in the Cape Fear region. The group notified Wilmington City Council that it should stop any sectarian prayers before meetings as well.
