New Columbus Co. DSS director named | News

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new director has been named for Columbus County’s Department of Social Services.

Algernon McKenzie, who has been with the department for years and is the distant relative of Columbus County Commissioner Amon McKenzie, has been named the new director.

Former DSS director Gerald Fogle resigned back in November following an investigation into allegations of unfair treatment and discrimination.

Amon McKenzie says that commissioners are not involved in the hiring process. They only vote on salaries.

Only DSS board members are involved in hiring process. He says that commissioners appoint two people to a five-person DSS board.

Edwin Russ is the only commissioner on the board.
