County leaders looking to bring trains back to Columbus Co. | News

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Dozens of people met in Columbus County to talk about bringing train service between Columbus County and several South Carolina counties to the area. 

Officials decided to form a committee which will work with Carolina Southern to get train tracks to meet government regulations.

County commissioners in Columbus County, Marion County, SC and Horry County, SC will appoint two people to the committee. Municipalities will appoint one person. County economic directors will also serve on the committee. Dennis Worley, an attorney  in Tabor City, will serve as the vice chair.

Officials tell us, the biggest challenge is fixing 7 bridges. They say, it'll cost a little more than $1 million dollars to repair the bridges and more than $4 million dollars to replace the bridges.

Due to train tracks not meeting government regulations, a train has not traveled through Columbus County in a year. The meeting will take place in Loris, SC, which is a few miles outside of Tabor City. The meeting next Monday will be at the public safety office and will begin at 6 p.m.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 7th.
