UPDATE: Court cases move forward so animals can be adopted from shelter | News

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Assistant District Attorney Heath Nance said officials are trying to move forward with court cases that are preventing animals from being adopted from the Columbus County Animal Shelter.

According to Rossie Hayes, Director of Columbus County Animal Control Services, two pit bulls have been at the county's animal shelter for more than a year.

Hayes says the dogs were brought in when their owners were charged with animal cruelty, and now, they have to remain there until the case goes to court.

According to Hayes, 14 other dogs have been in six kennels since September. The owner of those dogs was also charged with animal cruelty.

The animals are taking up needed space and are creating extra work for shelter employees.

Nance said Monday they are working to expedite these cases.
