COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office spent some time Saturday checking in on sweepstakes parlors in the area.
When deputies drove by The Corner Store in Cerro Gordo they noticed several parked cars and stopped to investigate.
Deputies said they saw people playing Pot of Gold inside the establishment, which is illegal.
According to Major Lewis Hatcher, there has been some controversy surrounding Pot of Gold scamming people out of money.
Hatcher said the two deputies who focus on enforcing laws for sweepstakes parlors are seizing Pot of Gold machines in the area. The mayor said, however, they are waiting until everything settles legally before they start taking other machines.
According to Hatcher, it is illegal to even have a Pot of Gold machine in your possession.
Deputies were told the owner at The Corner Store was out of town. They're in the process of trying to find the owner so they can charge the person.
