Columbus Co. residents collect supplies for Kansas tornado victims

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Wednesday, several citizens in Columbus County held an event call Columbus County Cares.

As part of the event, a tractor trailer is set up in the Whiteville Walmart parking lot, where volunteers are asking people to donate toiletries and non-perishable items to victims of the Oklahoma tornado.

(Wilmington, NC, May, 2013) -  The YWCA Lower Cape Fear is pleased to announce that it has received a $15,000 grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation for the Fluid Recovery program, which was developed in partnership with the Pretty in Pink Foundation. The Fluid Recovery program is modeled after the YWCA USA’s Encoreplus program that was created over 30 years ago.

The event will take place Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m. at Southeastern Community College, according to the event’s website.

Proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society

Become a volunteer for domestic violence, assault victims

COLUMBUS and BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’d like to learn more about domestic violence, sexual assault or how to volunteer to help victims of both, a local domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy agency will hold a training session soon, according to The Bladen Journal.

Families First, which represents Bladen in Columbus counties, will host training sessions April 9, 16 and 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – There’s still time to sign up for Relay For Life of Columbus County – in fact, only two more teams are needed to reach the group’s 50 team goal.

According to Relay For Life’s Facebook page, this year’s event will take place April 19 at Southeastern Community College.

Barbecue plate sale for memorial scholarship taking place soon

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The West Columbus High School FFA Alumni Association will be hosting a barbecue plate sale to raise money for a scholarship soon at Piney Forest Baptist Church.

According to a Facebook page for the event, it will take place Friday, Feb. 22, and the scholarship is in memory of Justin Turbeville.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Relay for Life of Columbus County is collecting donations from arts and crafters, vendors and small businesses for an online auction soon, according to the group’s Facebook page.

The event is called the “Silent No More” auction.
