Spring forward tonight; daylight saving time starts

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) – Don’t forget that daylight saving time starts this weekend, which means that, sadly, we’ll all lose an hour of sleep.

But on the bright side, we’ll have a little bit more time to enjoy the sunshine every day as summer approaches.

Don’t forget before you go to bed tonight to set all of your clocks, watches, microwaves and ovens ahead one hour. Most smart phones will adjust on their own at 2 a.m. on Sunday, so you don’t have to worry about them.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A retirement event honoring Peggy Yoder Blackmon was held on Jan. 15 in recognition of her 31 years of service to Southeastern Community College. During this time, Blackmon served as dean of nursing and was a teacher, mentor and advocate for innumerable nursing students and instructors as well.

She retired with the title dean of allied health and technologies, as her duties over the past few years had increased.

“Whether taking care of her own family or her Southeastern family, Peggy seems to always be tending to the needs of others,” SCC President Kathy Matlock said at the event. “That nurturing spirit, along with her background, has enabled her to relate so well to the students we serve.”

Whiteville grill recommended by 'Our State' as a place not to miss

Ward's Grill was featured in "Our State" magazine.

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - In each monthly issue, Our State magazine features a variety of food topics. Included in the March issue is Roadside Eats, a list of 70 locally owned food serving places, from the mountains to the coast, they recommend trying -- and on the list is a Whiteville institution, Ward's Grill.

Most mornings, this is where you will find Junior McKeel, behind the grill of the business he has owned and operated for over 40 years. In the early 70s, McKeel bought Ward's Grill. For the past four decades, McKeel has been serving up what many say are the best burgers and hot dogs you'll find for miles around.

"We have a lot of people who have been coming here for years," said McKeel. "We have a lot of people coming in from Fair Bluff, Hallsboro, Delco, Tabor City, Nakina, Williams and Riegelwood, a lot of people from Riegelwood."

Southeastern Community College will hold a public reception on Feb. 25 from 5-7 p.m. to mark the opening of an art exhibit featuring work inspired by watermarks and wall papers from the 1930s.

Artist Colleen Ringrose created the collection of encaustic paintings by combining the ancient art of wax painting with the computer technology of digital copy transfers. Her work focuses on the intersection of pictures of people and text.

These specific works were inspired by a book for stamp collectors from 1936.
