City and state leaders meet to discuss concerns, annexation

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A Wake County Superior Court judge ruled Monday that the petition process that terminated the Monkey Junction annexation is unconstitutional.

Monday, Judge Shannon Joseph ruled on the side of five cities fighting to declare the petition process unconstitutional.

The judge's decision also has leaders in Whiteville eyeing neighborhoods they would like to bring inside their city limits.

Thursday morning, Whiteville City Council members got the chance to sit down with state lawmakers who represent their area and voice their concerns.

Many issues were discussed, but annexation was the main topic of conversation.

"It helps increase the tax base in the town," said Terry Mann, Whiteville Mayor. "As town goes on [sic], you have some deterioration in the inner cities. People move out of the town, the population goes down and it's just a good growth formula."
