ADA in Jon David's office to challenge Judge Jolly for his job

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - Fred Gore, an Assistant District Attorney under DA Jon David, has filed to challenge Judge Jerry Jolly for his position as District Court Judge in District 13.

Jolly and Gore both signed up to run on the first day of the filing period.

Gore joined District Attorney David's office when he took over in Brunswick, Columbus and Bladen Counties in 2011. Gore is also a Captain in the National Guard and deployed in October for a ten month stint in Kuwait.

Seven democrats sign up to run for seats in Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The election filing period began at noon on Monday and seven democrats signed up to run for seats in Columbus County.

Democrats Ken Waddell and Al Leonard, Jr. threw their hats in the ring for the N.C. House of Representatives. James E. Prevatte, Giles E. (Buddy) Byrd, Edwin Russ and Trent Burroughs will run for County Commissioner spots.

Kandance H. Whitehead signed paperwork to join the race for Register of Deeds.

No republicans have filed to run for election as of 5 p.m. on Monday.

Whiteville City Council to meet Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – The Whiteville City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Here are some items of interest from the meeting’s agenda:

  • City of Whiteville’s annual financial audit
  • Limitations and prohibitions regarding concealed weapons
  • Appointments to the ABC Board and Parks Advisory Board
  • Black History Month proclamation

The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 317 S. Madison Street in Whiteville.

McIntyre: Lake Waccamaw Post Office removed from closure list

McIntyre: Lake Waccamaw Post Office removed from closure list

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Lake Waccamaw Post Office has been saved, according to U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre.

He announced Tuesday that the post office was removed from the closure list by the United States Postal Service.

“This is a great victory for the residents of Lake Waccamaw! The Lake Waccamaw Post Office is an essential component in day-to-day living and in business operations, and its removal from the USPS closure list reinforces that,” McIntyre stated in a news release. “I have been honored to work with Mayor Ivan Wilson, and he is to be commended for his leadership, the entire Lake Waccamaw community is to be applauded, for their efforts to keep this facility open!  Indeed, this is a gold star day for Lake Waccamaw!”

In December, the Postal Service sent a letter to residents in Hallsboro and Lake Waccamaw informing them the offices in those towns could soon consolidate.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) –The Columbus County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Here are some items of interest from the meeting’s agenda:

  • Approval of radio improvement capital project ordinance
  • Adoption of Agrarian Growth Zone designation
  • Appointments to the Animal Control Advisory Council, and Equalization and Review Board
  • Adjustments to the December 2011 monthly water bills from the Columbus County Water and Sewer Districts I, II, III, IV, and V

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Dempsey B. Herring Courthouse, located at 112 W. Smith Street in Whiteville.

Former Whiteville city manager arrested

Former Whiteville city manager arrested

FARMINGTON, NM (WECT) - Former Whiteville city manager Joshua Ray, 32, was arrested for domestic violence on Christmas.

Ray is currently the city manager of Aztec in northwest New Mexico.  According to several media outlets in New Mexico, Ray was arrested on suspicion of felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor battery against a household member.  They are reporting he allegedly held his wife down, took her cell phone, computer and car keys.

Ray's wife reportedly told investigators she struggled with her husband in an effort to get away, but couldn't.  The former Whiteville city manager admitted the couple was arguing but denied he pinned down his wife.

CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) – The Chadbourn Town Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Here are some items of interest from the meeting’s agenda:

  • Robert Segal and Associates will present an update on the cost-savings program for the Town
  • Revisit the proposed peddlers, itinerant merchants, yard sales and solicitors ordinance
  • Awarding the contract for the Dogwood and Joyner streets water line improvement project
  • Rate schedule for commercial utility accounts

The meeting is open to the public and is scheduled to take place at Town Hall.
