Chadbourn town manager in trouble again with law enforcement

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A town manager in Columbus County, who was indicted for impersonating a police officer earlier this year, just had another brush with the law.

Last month Stevie Cox, the town manager of Chadbourn, was charged with running a stop sign, driving with a revoked license plate and driving without car insurance, according to Columbus County Sheriff's Deputies.

Officials say the incident occurred in Chadbourn.

Cox was arrested in March and charged with impersonating a law officer and resisting and delaying police.  It all stemmed from a traffic stop.

According to Cox's attorney Butch Pope, Cox, Chadbourn Mayor Kenneth Waddell and two members on Chadbourn's ABC board were on the way back from Raleigh when they were pulled over by a NC Highway Patrol officer because Cox was speeding.

Chadbourn mayor decides to run against long-time state representative

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The mayor of Chadbourn hopes the second time around will be enough to beat a long-time state representative.

Mayor Kenneth Waddell said he will run against Dewey Hill to be the democratic nominee for the District 20 State Representative. The two men ran against each other in 2010 and Hill beat Waddell by 600 votes.

Waddell has been a Chadbourn Town Council member since 1987, and has been mayor for six of those years.

Last year, he ran for State Representative District 20 and lost in the primary to Dewey Hill. Now, Waddell says, he's ready to give it another shot.

“I was so close the last time,” said Waddell. “Plus, I want to see if I can get in there and make a difference. If we don't create some jobs in these tier one counties like Columbus, Robeson, and Bladen, we're not going to accomplish anything.

Columbus Co. Commissioners vote down ID bill

Columbus Co. Commissioners vote down ID bill

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Commissioners in Craven County voted Monday morning to pass and send a resolution to Raleigh saying they support a voter ID bill.  Monday night, commissioners in Columbus County voted 7-0 against a resolution saying they're in favor of the bill.

Commissioners decided to put the voter ID bill on the agenda after they received an email from officials in Gatson County asking for input. Commissioner Amon McKenzie believes there are bigger issues for state lawmakers to focus their attention instead.

"I would think that our legislators would have a more pressing matter," said McKenzie. "I think they can be looking at job bills as opposed to voter ID bills."
