Vikings participate in VIP for VIPs program at SCC

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Six members of the West Columbus High School JROTC “Viking” Battalion recently participated in the VIP for VIPs program at Southeastern Community College, according to Columbus County Schools.

The program was reportedly presented to several of the independent schools in the county and focused on showing teenage drives the consequences of inappropriate behavior while driving.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Evergreen Elementary School won first place at the Battle of the Books competition in Columbus County recently.

According to the Columbus County Schools website, Nakina Middle School took home the second place trophy and Hallsboro Middle rounded out the top three.

Graduation is almost upon Southeastern Community College students

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Students will be receiving their associate degrees, curriculum and GED diplomas and certificates soon.

Southeastern Community College will hold its 47th commencement exercises on Friday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. in front a A-Building on the college’s campus.

In the event of rain, the ceremony will reportedly be held at the same time inside the West Columbus High School auditorium.

Resilient SCC student wins competitions in state leadership conference

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Lori Hotte of Hallsboro placed second in the business law and fourth in the accounting principles competitions at the PBL State Leadership Conference in Charlotte recently.

The Southeastern Community College student will represent the school at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida this summer.

Hotte, who reportedly was diagnosed with cancer and had to have a lung removed recently, was recognized for maintaining a 4.0 average and for being actively involved in campus events.

Art show will feature painting, drawing, photography of SCC students

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) — An exhibit featuring art work by Southeastern Community College students will open with a reception on Monday, April 25 from 6-8 p.m. in the college’s Upstairs Gallery in A-Building.

According to a press release, the annual student art exhibit includes more than 75 pieces created by SCC students during the academic year. The show will feature painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics and sculpture.

Donna Hardee, an adjunct art instructor at SCC, will reportedly judge the exhibit. Winners will be announced at the opening reception.

“Throughout the year, our Upstairs Gallery houses exhibits by acclaimed professional artists, but the student art exhibit is always our most important,” said Ron Cole, SCC art instructor, in a statement. “The exhibit advances our core mission, which is to cultivate and recognize the artistic talents of our students. I am proud of the pieces that will be on display, and I urge the public to take advantage of this opportunity to see the work of our accomplished students.”

The exhibit, sponsored by the SCC Foundation, can be viewed by the public Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

SCC offers Work Zone Flagger course on Saturday

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) — The Work Zone Flagger class will be offered on Saturday, May 14 at Southeastern Community College from 8 a.m. until noon.

The course will be held in the T- Building, room 122.  The registration fee is $65, plus $5 for the textbook, “Flagger Training.” 

The NC Department of Transportation requires this training for all employees who are directing traffic and facilitating safe passage in a work zone within a DOT right of way.

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) — The Southeastern Community College choir, under the direction of Robin Fort, will present a concert on Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m.

The concert theme is “American Folk Music,” and selections will include “Americana,” a folk song suite by Luigi Zaninelli; “Amazing Grace,” arranged by John Coates, Jr.; “Aura Lee,” arranged by Edward Palmer; and “Hear That Fiddle Play,” arranged by John Purifoy and accompanied on the fiddle by Daniel Barnes.

According to a press release, vocal soloists will include Jamila Jones, Tenikia Shipman and Chester Mc Kenzie.
