East, West Columbus high schools to play each other in basketball Friday

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The East Columbus and West Columbus high school basketball teams will compete on the court Friday, according to The News Reporter.

The games will be held at West Columbus. At 4 p.m., the girls’ JV teams will play, followed by the boys’ JV teams at 5:30 p.m.

Afterwards, the girls’ varsity teams will play at 7 p.m., then the boys’ at 8:30 p.m.

West Columbus is located at 7294 Andrew Jackson Hwy. in Cerro Gordo.

ECU dental center could be coming to Columbus, Brunswick or Bladen Co.

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) – East Carolina University leaders are considering opening a dental community learning center in Southeastern NC.

According to Kim Smith, the health director at ECU, the university is considering putting a center in either Columbus, Bladen, or Brunswick counties.

Smith says that whichever county ECU ends up choosing, the school will pay for the building, but the county must donate two acres of land.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Dr. Sharyn Edwards, a renowned pianist and longtime member of the Southeastern Community College music faculty, will commemorate her 45th year in concert with a special performance on Friday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the SCC Auditorium.

Edwards has performed throughout the eastern United States and abroad.

She made her New York debut in 1999 in Carnegie Hall and has recorded two CDs. She has performed as a piano soloist with the Wilmington, Charlotte and Charleston symphony orchestras.

SCC ceramics class starts Jan. 24

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A course starting January 24 at Southeastern Community College will provide an introduction to ceramics.

The class, taught by Deena Sarvis, will emphasize the fundamentals of forming, surface design, glaze application, and firing.

Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in different hand-building construction techniques, simple wheel forms, glaze technique, and creative expression.

Commissioners to talk school safety, dentist partnership

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Commissioners in Columbus County will meet Monday evening for their regularly scheduled meeting.

The board is expected to request the school board to add more school resource officers throughout the county. This request stems from the recent shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT.

Commissioners will also discuss a potential partnership with ECU school of dental medicine.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It’s back to school for students and teachers in Columbus County Wednesday.

The winter holiday break began with a half day Dec. 20, giving everyone a break from the hustle and bustle.

Students will get another mini-break later this month with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The last day of school in Columbus County is June 10.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Columbus County offices and departments will be closed from Monday, Dec. 24 through Wednesday, Dec. 26 for the holidays, according to the county's website.

The following offices are included in the closings: Administration, Aging, Airport, Animal Control, Attorney, Board of Elections, Cooperative Extension, Department of Social Services, Economic Development, Emergency Services, Finance, Fire Marshal, GIS, Governing Body, Health Department, Inspections, Library, Maintenance, MIS, Parks and Recreation, Personnel, Planning, Public Housing, Public Transportation, Public Utilities, Purchasing, Register of Deeds, Safety, Sheriff, Soil and Water, Solid Waste, Tax Office, Tourism, Veterans Services.
