SCC offers free disaster preparedness training

SCC offers free disaster preparedness training

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Are you ready for a disaster? Most of us are not. Now is the time to prepare for a disaster. Southeastern Community College offers classes to help people prepare for emergencies associated with hurricanes, tornadoes, ice, and fire.

The goal of this training is to prepare people to offer minor assistance between the event of the disaster and the time that emergency personnel are able to respond. Students will learn to assemble a basic disaster kit and what to expect when a disaster strikes.

Columbus Co. under a flood advisory

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for northwestern Columbus County until 6 p.m.

Around 4 p.m., the Doppler Radar indicated thunderstorms with "very heavy rain near the intersection of Marion, Horry, Columbus and Robeson counties." Cerro Gordo, Fair Bluff and Evergreen were included in the advisory as locations where more than an inch of rain is possible.

Northern Horry County, northeastern Marion County, southeastern Dillon County and southern Robeson County are also under a flood advisory.

Drivers are advised to avoid areas where the water covers the roadway. Report any flooding to the National Weather Service at 877-633-6772.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for parts of Columbus Co.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northern Columbus County until 6:15 p.m.

The NWS Doppler Radar indicated the storm is capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 10 p.m.

To report hail, downed trees or damaging winds to the National Weather Service, call 877-633-6772.

Stay hydrated; heat advisory in effect in Columbus Co.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. on Friday for Columbus County.

Heat index values could reach 107 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The most uncomfortable conditions should occur in the afternoon.

Make sure you stay hydrated, take frequent rest breaks and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Don't forget to check out the WECT weather page to keep track of the forecast.
